Brainstorm

Some of the things I have been considering submitting for the upcoming art show are: 1 an LED screen that lights up according to the beats in the music that plays alongside it 2 a Random generator that displays different compilations of choreography (pre designated) 3 user enters a number and a color and the program generates an image according to the given parameters 4 a "rolling" image that creates a kaleidoscope effect from feed from a webcam 5 user interactive beer pong simulation game showing users what happens to the other team when different shots are made etc. 6 "Harlem Shake" generator, starts with single stick figure dancing, when beat drops Random generator selects the number of figures that will dance in the next scene 7 Jungle Book story simulation, walks through scenes from the story and asks for user input 8 A day in the life of Max the dog, watch Max eat food, chase a stick, go outside, and sleep

Processing Art

Giacomo Balla
"Study for Compenetrazione iridescente" (Iridescent interpritation)
1912

I chose this piece because I found it really interesting to look at but I figured that it would be simple enough to be able to draw out myself after a few hours of trying to do a more complicated piece and getting no where.  I really enjoyed the artist's use of water colors to paint the piece and I wanted to try and manipulate that texture somehow through Processing.

In order to "update" the piece, I used the mousePressed and mouseMoved system variables to alter the color of some of the blocks present in the piece.

This video shows my piece and what happens when you click on it and move the cursor around the screen.  I decided to only manipulate the color in a few of the boxes because I though it looked more interesting maintaining the majority of the original coloration of the piece.

I thought this project was a lot of fun but it took me a lot of time and effort to come up with what I have.  I ended up drawing out the coordinates for every box you see and filling them with the corresponding color, then putting a grayscale image of water color paint over the top of the whole thing to make it look hand painted.

3 Interesting Artists

New Media Artists!

Multimedia Dance Piece
Conception/Direction : Yuzo Ishiyama
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbjwLpxB1iU

I find this piece very interesting because of how much multimedia was able to be incorporated into this dance piece.  The timing and placement of the technological aspects and of the dancers had to be very precise to achieve the look that was achieved through the performance of this piece.   Of all of the arts, I feel that dance has probably been least influenced by multimedia artists as a whole, but of the few who have been able to break into the field of dance, all of their work, including this "Multimedia Dance Piece" by Yuzo Ishiyama, it is quite impressive to see technology working with humans (dancers) so seamlessly.

Animusic
Wayne Lytle

Animusic is an interesting concept that I stumbled upon that was originally thought of by Wayne Lytle in 1982.  Mr. Lytle envisioned synchronizing music and animation.  I really enjoy his works because they all create a very entertaining way to watch music as it is being made.  The company has actually now produced several DVD's showcasing the different songs accompanied with animated visualizations.  The song I found first and like most of all that I have seen can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klfzGdeOaws. All of the songs produced by Mr. Lytle and his company are very pleasing to both the ear and the eye.

StereoScape
Kimmo Kangasniemi

Artist Kimmp Kangasniemi and his team at StereoScape make 3D work.  They have done things from 3D holographic projections to recreating old movies to be viewed in a stunning realistic form of 3D.  I watched their videos on a 3D television and their work is truly stunning from what I can tell.  They have also created 3D holographic projections for things from gasoline to shrimp sandwich sales.  I think their work is very interesting and I would like to learn more about how 3D holographic projection works.

Initial Post

Experience:
As far as programming goes, I have some experience with Programming from the ISTA 301 class last semester. Also, I took a semester of computer programming in Java (CS 127A). I know some other basic things in different languages but I am not very fluent with anything other than these two.

I have a somewhat broad understanding of art history, mainly focusing in dance and music. During high school I was very involved in the arts and was a part of the "Fine and Performing Arts Academy" graduating at the top of my class and lettering in both dance and drama.

Another thing I am pretty competent at is working with video and music manipulation on the computer.  Though I have not had formal training in either of these, I have been working with programs like Magix, Garage Band, Corell Draw, and Photoshop for years. I tend to do pretty well with picking up new computer programs too.
